FAQs (Updated 9/1/2015)

So I’ve been receiving a lot of the same questions over and over via e-mail. Figured it was time to start an FAQ list. If you have a question not on here, please post it and it may be added to the list too.

Q: I cannot make it to the shop during your regular hours. Can I come down at another time?
A: No, I am afraid that isn’t possible. We’re a club run by student volunteers that generously donate their time to help the Stony Brook community. I am sorry that you can’t make it, but we simply cannot set-up extra appointments as we are all busy with classes, teaching, research, etc. Please visit one of the professional bicycle shops in the area if our hours do not fit your schedule.

Q: Do you rent bicycles?
A: No, we do not offer a bicycle rental program. You should consider using one of the SBU share bikes if you are looking for loaner bike. For more information please see:  http://www.stonybrook.edu/sustainability/biking-at-stony-brook/wolf-ride-bike-share.shtml

Q: Is your shop open to _________________? (graduate students, undergraduate students, international students, staff, faculty, etc).
A. Yes, we are open to the entire campus community during our regular shop hours.

Q: How do I get a free bicycle?
A: We do not give away free bicycles. I’m not sure where this rumor started, but we have never given away free bikes. We do offer a bike refurbishment program. Students earn a bike by committing to rebuild an abandoned bike. These projects usually require at least a month of repairs, which are completed by the student wishing to earn the bike. This is a serious commitment and if the student fails to return for two or more consecutive weeks, the bike will be returned to the pool of available bikes.

Q: Are there any bikes available for repair?
A: Honestly, the answer to this question is usually “No”. The bikes we do have are claimed as fast as we bring them in. If you’re really certain you want to commit the time and energy to repairing a bike, then please come to our shop during regular shop hours to speak with one of our mechanics.

Q: Is there a reservation list for bikes?
A: No, it’s first come, first served during regular shop hours.

Q: Can I drop off my bike for repairs?
A: No, this is not how we operate. Our goal as a club is to empower cyclists by teaching them to repair and maintain their bikes. It’s OK if you don’t have any mechanical skills. We’re always happy teach as long as people are willing to learn (and be patient!). If that isn’t something you’re interested in, then I would recommend taking your bike to a local bike shop for repairs.

Q: Do you sell new or used bicycles?
A: No, we do not sell bicycles. We can recommend local shops if you’re looking to purchase something new or used.

  1. Q: Where can we refill repaired tires on campus? Is there a communal pump?

    • A: I do not know of a communal campus pump. We have pumps, which you can use during our regular shop hours (please see the hours section for current info).
