Early Saturday West Meadow Beach Ride

This weekend, Jenny will lead a local ride at an earlier time. Please RSVP in the comments section if you intend to ride. Here’s what she has in mind:

“I’m ready to lead an early ride on saturday. I propose to depart from the fountain @ 8 a.m. and go to West Meadow beach to enjoy the sunrise and walking on the beach. Stop at Anne Marie’s farm stand on the way back. Return early enough to get a good day’s worth of work done.”

This is a nice, local ride of easy to moderate difficulty. There are only a few hills, traffic is fairly light, and the scenery is nice. The round-trip distance (if you go all the way out to the tip of West Meadow Beach) will probably be less than 10 miles.

Here’s a hypothetical route from campus to West Meadow, with a stop at Anne Marie’s on the way back.

Ride to Nissequogue and St. James. Saturday 10am. Fountain. Be there.

We’ll go somewhere by bike starting from the fountain at admin at 10am saturday.

I propose the following ride (it’s similar to one we’ve done in the past:

distance: ~16.5 mile

difficulty: some hilly terrain and some high traffic area

This is a road ride through Stony Brook, Head of the Harbor, Nissequogue, and St. James. The hills along the back reaches of Stony Brook Harbor and the Nissequogue River are pretty fun, but they require you and your bike to be in reasonably good condition. You should always wear a helmet, and you should definitely wear one on this ride. Please bring something for your lunch or bring a little money, we will stop in St. James for baked goods or other food treats.

Update: If the weather is bad, we won’t ride. A little rain isn’t too bad, and we have done a group ride in the pouring rain before. I’ll post the final call here around 9am tomorrow. The chance of rain is still low, predicted at 30%
Update: Still a chance of rain, but things are looking ok now. I’ll be out at the fountain if there are any takers.

Last Saturday’s Ride + New Ride

Yesterday, we went for a group ride. The weather was nice, a little cool, a little windy, but overall good. Three of us (J.Matt, Noto, and Adam) rode from campus through Stony Brook, Setauket, Poquott, and Port Jefferson. Highlights included stops at several yard sales, seeing swan and osprey at the Poquott harbor, and seeing the signs of spring in the new vegetation and flowers. Our route was a tidy 11 miles.

I’d like to get more people out on the rides with us, so I’m looking for other people to suggest times and destinations for group rides. Otherwise, I will continue to be out at the fountain on the academic mall at 10am on Saturday mornings and ready to ride with anyone that shows up.
